Governors Island
When looking up things to do in New York, Governors Island was one of the places that popped up. I was at my friend’s apartment on Saturday, September 26th and we saw that the following day was the last day to visit the island as it was closing to the public. We decided that we should probably do it seeing as it was going to be our only chance to get there.

On Sunday morning, we took the ferry from Battery Park across to Governors Island. We strolled around the island and saw some beautiful views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey and the Statue of Liberty. They are in the process of building four hills on the island that reach up to 80 feet to give some of the best views of the city.

Governors Island was used as a military base for almost two centuries. There is nobody living on the island but it is very well up-kept. I imagine it to be a beautiful place for families in the summer. There are a lot of parks and greenery, and it is known as New York City’s “Playground for the Arts”. Each year food festivals, cultural events and concerts take place on the island.

There was a lovely atmosphere on the island, with a lot of little food stalls, music playing, and many people eating and strolling around. It gave a lovely feel to the island.

I would recommend going to the island if you get a chance. It was so peaceful and it was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet still taking in those magnificent views.
